On-Farm Research
One of the main themes that came from the preliminary needs
assessment work was that more farmers, and their crop advisers, are
interested in running product or management system comparisons on their
own land. This practice is known as "On-Farm Research" and has
been in practice for many years, but the current set of tools available
today - both in the field and in the office - make well-designed on-farm
research more attainable.
To be able to trust the results from on-farm research trials, the
research needs to be done in a scientific manner with properly laid out
plots and sound data analysis. This section of this IFAFS project
addresses these issues.
If you are planning to do on-farm research for the next growing season,
you may want to begin with Planning and
Analyzing Qualitative On-Farm Research with Microsoft Excel 2000 .
This 67-page pdf document walks through the basics of plot layout and
statistical analysis. If you prefer, this document is also available as a web
page.
A two-hour workshop, based on this information was presented at InfoAg2001.
If you are interested in teaching on-farm research as a workshop, the pdf
file and the accompanying slide set
are available for download.
